2013 Ford Edge Concept details

In summary, what the 2013 Ford Concept is all about – revamped appearance which now spells sleek and sporty, fuel efficiency, capability and driver assisting technology. All together, it is a car that every buyer in the utility segment aspires for.

According to Joe Hinrichs, executive vice president and president of the the Americas, Ford Motor Company, ‘The original Ford Edge offered customers in North America a fresh, compelling choice for an accommodating, efficient and safe medium utility vehicle. The next generation Edge – previewed in the Ford Edge Concept – will build on these cornerstones to create a global vehicle with technology to make life easier, and design and craftsmanship to appeal to customers around the globe.’

Starting with the exterior design features, one can suggest fluid and athletic. A D-Pillar line coming down the rail and returning gives a highlighting feature to the side view. The hood has a pronounced shape due to the rearward slope which also gives it a compact yet muscular look. The look is completed with the connection to LED headlamps. The front fascia incorporates active aerodynamic shutters. They automatically open and close to maintain ideal engine operating temperature. It works in this way – when activated, a panel slps down from above, leading to two more to move into place. This gives an appearance that they are radiating from the Ford oval. Both the headlamps and taillamps of the car is LED lighting. The headlamps light up in complete white and the individual LEDs light up crystal cubes on the high beams. The exterior is painted in Copper Flame, a modern interpretation of a premium colour currently popular on Ford cars.

In interiors, it is a visual delight due to an airy and roomy cabin constructed with premium materials and craftsmanship. As Hak Soo Ha, interior design manager says, ‘We wanted the interior to be consistent in its dnamic character with the exterior f the Ford Edge Concept. We call the interior environment Dynamic Sanctuary, because it combines the energetic character of the exterior with a more premium cabin execution. The shapes provide a dynamic, in motion impression that soothes rather than fatigues.’

The interior features consist of –

  • Leather wrapped and hand stitched instrument panel
  • 10 inch touch screen center display with MyFord Touch
  • Dynamic center stack with premium mechanical switchgear
  • Unique gear shifter
  • Bright work on the armrest, door release bezel and air registers
  • Floating binnacle top
  • Unique steering wheel
  • Scuff plate with bright silver finish, matte black paint

The leather seats are made with premium stitching, perforation pattern and accent plating in the head restraint and top of the shoulder bolster. There is a wonderful colour contrast seen as copper is the accent colour seen in the carpet, instrument panel and other areas while Premium Black Nubuck is seen wrapping the upper instrument panel, center console and door elements. The texture is heavy and oil grained and has the tactile finish similar to high quality leather.

Little is known from Ford about the powertrain of the car. We can expect it to be the EcoBoost 2.0 litre four cylinder engine. The car has a lot to offer on the safety features. According to Raj Nair, Ford Group Vice President of global product development, ‘the rate of change in vehicle technology right now is unprecedented. Our engineers around the world are advancing the systems that will untimely help make drivers smarter, safer and more efficient. From advanced engine systems to collisions avoidance and automated driving systems, Ford will continue to lead in delivering the technologies consumers want and need.’
